West Valley History

The area around the White Tanks is full of rich and ancient history. The White Tank Mountains themselves are believed to have been a summer retreat for the Hohokam people. There are miles of hiking trails, some easy - some more strenuous.

The Waterfall trail is a popular favorite as you can see many petroglyphs along the way to the waterfall. There is just about always water trickling down the rock, but sometimes you get lucky enough to see a full waterfall if you manage to get there just after a heavy rain.

There is evidence of their petroglyphs as well as even more ancient native markings. There are ruins in some of the canyons that are relatively small, hence the thought of summering from the heat of the summer in the valley.

These ancient people were farmers and were the ones who built the oringinal canals and irrigation systems found throughout the valley.

Today, the area is surronded by modern day people and businesses. Surprise being one of the larger communities around the White Tanks has been one of the fastest growing cities in the valley.

Many new developments can be found as well as shopping and new schools and soon to be the home of one of the larges shopping malls in the state.
